Evidence for Indirect Pathogenicity of Anaerobic BLPB

The production of the enzyme BL is an important mechanism of indirect pathogenicity of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria that is especially apparent in polymicrobial infection. Not only are the organisms that produce the enzyme protected from the activity of penicillins, but other penicillin-susceptible organisms can also be shielded. This protection can occur when the enzyme BL is secreted into the infected tissues or abscess fluid in sufficient quantities to break the penicillin's beta-lactam ring before it can kill the susceptible bacteria (Fig. 1) (199-203).

Clinical and laboratory studies will be described that provide support for this hypothesis.
