Introduction

This chapter discusses the most commonly used methods for the study of sphingolipids in their role as messengers of cell death. A basic review of sphingolipids and the role they play in apoptosis is given. The rest of the chapter outlines the methods used for the study of sphingolipids and the enzymes relevant to the sphingomyelin (SM) cycle. Each method is described with full experimental details, and emphasis is given to one or two protocols used for the study of each class of sphingolipids and relevant enzymes.
