Reorganization of tubulin is an integral part of the apoptotic process, independent of the involvement of tubulin in cell division (19). During apoptosis tubulin is reorganized into visible poiymcTi/ed tubulin structures (20) which display characteristics similar to those observed following treatment with drugs that do interact directly with tubulin (21). Disruption of the microtubule architecture might influence signalling cascades. Recent studies by Blagosklonny et ai. (22) have shown that disruption of microtubular architecture leads to Raf-1 activation and Bcl-2 phosphorylation, serving a role similar to p53 induction following DNA damage.
