Conclusions

Although organic nitrates have been in clinical use for many years, it is only more recently that their mechanisms of action have been clarified. The complexity of these mechanisms account, in part, for the multiplicity of its clinical activity and the variety of clinical situations in which they find use. These vary from heart failure to angina pectoris, to isolated systolic hypertension. Rather than being supplanted by newer, safer and more effective medications, the nitrates appear firmly established and widely used in their present roles.
