Polyuria, thirst, and weight loss is the classic triad of symptoms of diabetes. Initial diagnosis is usually confirmed by measurement of plasma glucose by one of the following tests:
- A single plasma glucose > 11.1 mmol l_1
- Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) > 7.0 mmol lP
- 2-h plasma glucose (PG) > 11.1 mmol p1 during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)
As part of the initial diagnosis, a complete medical evaluation should be performed to overrule any possible complications, and a complete management plan should be formulated.
