unassigned member of the family Herpesviridae, isolated from juvenile white sturgeon, Acipenser transmontanus, suffering mortality during rearing in north-west American hatcheries. The virus replicates in white sturgeon epidermal cell cultures, inducing syncytia. Associated with epidermal hyperplasia and necrosis in the fish. The virus could be transmitted to juvenile white sturgeon but not to trout.
