Porcine endogenous retrovirus PoEV A

possible species in the genus Lentivirus. Mitogenic activation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from a minipig and a Yucatan pig resulted in activation and release of an infectious C-type virus that was shown to infect both human and pig cell lines. The virus is of concern regarding the possible use of pigs as organ transplantation donors for humans. Analysis of genome sequences of a range of porcine species suggests that many other endogenous viruses remain to be characterized.
