slow virus infections A poor term for viruses causing slowly progressive disease, originally coined to describe slow progressive retrovirus diseases of sheep in Iceland. They include the lentiviruses but viruses of other families may cause diseases after a long incubation period, particularly Measles virus, JC polyomavirus, murine polio-encephalomyelopathy virus, rabies (depending on the infection route) and the transmissible spongiform encephalopathy agents (prions).
