Woolly monkey sarcoma virus (WMSV) A

species in the genus Gammaretrovirus. Isolated from a fibrosarcoma of a woolly monkey. Causes sarcomas on injection into marmosets. It is a transforming defective virus requiring simian sarcoma-associated virus as a helper to produce infective virus. The genome contains a single open reading frame encoding a single protein V-SIS, which is a fusion protein product of the virus env gene and the transduced c-sis oncogene of the woolly monkey. Other genes (pol and gag) were deleted when the genome was formed, so replication is not possible in the absence of the SSAV helper virus. The sis gene is derived from the cellular gene for P-platelet-derived growth factor which is involved in wound repair and will stimulate growth of fibroblasts in vitro.

Synonym: simian sarcoma virus.

woolly monkey type C virus A strain of Gibbon ape leukemia virus, a simian sarcoma-associated virus (SSAV), seen by electron microscopy and isolated from a spontaneous fibrosarcoma of a pet woolly monkey of Lagothrix sp. The woolly monkey lived in the same household as a pet gibbon, Hylobates lar, and the woolly monkey must have been infected by the Gibbon ape leukemia virus, since the isolates are of the same virus species.

Wut virus Synonym for Rabies virus.
