Step 5 Removing the Fragment from the Joint

A grasping instrument is used to remove the loose fragment (Fig. 6.31 and Fig. 6.32). Sometimes, it is better to leave a small strand still attached so that the fragment does not migrate around the joint. It is also better to grasp the fragment on the end, so it comes out of the portal easily. If the physician grasps it in the middle, it must fold over and is harder to remove through a small portal.
