Calculation of energy requirements can be obtained through mathematical equations. The most commonly used equation for calculating energy needs is the Harris-Benedict equation. The calculation is as follows:

Men: energy needs/24 hours = 66 + (13.7 X W) (5 X L) - (6.8 X A)

Women: energy needs/24 hours = 655 + (9.6 X W) + (1.7 X L) - (4.7 X A)

These calculations of energy needs are often multiplied by stress factors to arrive at a patient's overall calorie needs. There are alternative, simpler estimates of overall patient calorie needs dependent on whether they are in mild, moderate, or severe physiologic stress (Table 54-1).
