In addition, diagnosis of SOD is supported by liver and/or pancreatic enzyme abnormalities. A history of unexplained acute intermittent pancreatitis may result from SOD. The best-studied classification system is the Hogan-Geenen classification (also known as the Milwaukee Biliary Group Classification [Table 135-2]), where three categories were identified (types 1, 2, and 3). Note, that a similar classification has been adopted for patients with SOD and predominant pancreatic symptoms (presenting with recurrent idiopathic pancreatitis), and an otherwise negative workup.
