Conclusions

The continued application of evidence-based medicine concepts has been shown by Fritsche and colleagues, (2002) to increase knowledge. By being able to assess the validity of a clinical trial, a clinician using an evidence-based medicine approach can rapidly differentiate between a study that is worth reading versus a study that may, because of methodologic limitations, present flawed or misleading results. Evidence alone, however, is rarely sufficient to affect clinical decision making and must be considered along with other factors, such as potential costs (direct and indirect), risks, inconvenience, and feasibility of the interventions being considered. By incorporating these "best evidence" practices and values, clinicians are more likely to impact upon outcomes that are important to health care consumers and other interested parties, such as payers and society. With the rapid increase of medical information available in both traditional and untraditional formats, being able to discern well-designed trials will give the practicing clinician a distinct advantage with regards to conforming to the evolving standards of care for different conditions and health states. Additionally, the ability to explain the basis of current practice and limitations of knowledge to increasingly informed health care consumers is becoming more important. Using evidence-based medicine to identify and incorporate important new information into daily practice will keep the informed clinician in line with reasonable expectations for continued high levels of health care delivery.
