Definitions AN

AN is a behavioral disorder of self-starvation motivated by an exaggerated fear of fatness in which dieting and preoccupation with thinness come to dominate life. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) defines AN as failure to maintain body weight at 85% of expected, overval ued fear of fatness, and amenorrhea for three consecutive menstrual cycles. A minimum healthy target weight should correspond to a body mass index (BMI = weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters) of 20 or above, age-adjusted for adolescents. Lower target weights are unlikely to result in resolution of amenorrhea (Frisch and McArthur, 1974).

All patients with AN restrict their food intake and exhibit fear of fatness; some may also excessively exercise, and engage in binge eating, self-induced vomiting, or laxative, diuretic or diet pill abuse. As many as 40% of patients with AN develop BN over time, as they become unable to restrict their intake persistently enough to maintain a very low body weight (Eckert et al, 1995).
