Designated Individual

A designated individual, other than the practitioner performing the procedure, should be present to monitor the patient throughout procedures performed with sedation. All physicians administering endoscopic sedation should be trained in basic life support skills. At least one individual capable of establishing a patent airway and positive pressure ventilation should be present whenever sedation is administered. It is recommended that an individual with advanced life support skill be immediately available. As mentioned, in some states, an anesthetist or a nurse anesthetist is required in each room for propofol use.
