Epidemiology

Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. In the past generation, the prevalence of obesity has nearly doubled; Sixty-four percent of American adults are now overweight or obese. The recent increase in prevalence is even more dramatic among children and the severely obese, which does not bode well for the future. Indications are that even developing nations are seeing an increase in obesity, in part because of an adoption of Western diet and exercise patterns.

From where does this epidemic come? In the United States, although the percent of kilocalories from fat is decreasing (from a high of 40% to about 33% today), total daily caloric intake is increasing. Coupled with increasing numbers of adults and even children who are sedentary (one-fourth of adults engage in virtually no physical activity aside from activities of daily living). Despite recent discoveries in the molecular genetics of obesity, a major role for genetic influences is not a likely explanation for the rapid recent changes in the prevalence of obesity.
