Esophagectomy

Esophagectomy has been the standard procedure for HGD and early AC of the esophagus. The operative mortality is sensitive to the volume of procedures performed at an institution, but even at high volume institutions (greater than six procedures per year), the operative mortality remains 3%. The morbidity is 30% and includes primarily cardiopulmonary and anastomotic leaks. The five-year survival for esophagectomy for early AC in recent studies exceeds 80%. These excellent results are due to patient selection, experienced centers, and improved contemporary perioperative management.
