Evaluation of the Potential Candidate

When a patient presents to be examined for intestinal transplantation, it is imperative to perform a thorough evaluation of all available medical and surgical records. Evaluation of hepatic and renal function is of importance to determine the need to replace these organs. Inclusion of a kidney as part of the multivisceral transplantation is usually recommended in cases of marginal renal function because of immunosuppressive nephro-toxicity. The GI tract anatomy should be outlined in order to plan for the reconstruction at the time of transplantation. By the time of referral, most patients have undergone imaging studies, such as upper GI series and contrast enemata. On occasions, further studies are needed. Assessment of vessels patency is of great importance. Most patients have been on TPN, and as such probably have venous thrombosis to a greater or lesser degree (Kato et al, 1999).
