Future Trends Nurse Administered Propofol

There have been several recent studies involving the use of nurse-administered propofol in the endoscopy setting. A large study by Rex and colleagues (2002) of 2,000 patients concluded that propofol can be given safely by appropriately trained nurses under the supervision of endoscopists. They reported a reduced mean recovery time by approximately 31 minutes. Results included 5 episodes of oxygen desaturation to < 85% that were treated by brief (< 1 minute) periods of mask ventilation (Ulmer et al, 2003). Currently, in most states, nurses are prohibited from administering propo-fol, but this may change as more data substantiates its safety and efficacy in the endoscopy setting.
