Gardners Syndrome

Gardner's syndrome consists of intestinal polyposis, which represents premalignant lesions and multiple, impacted supernumerary (extra) teeth. This disorder is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait, and few afflicted patients with this syndrome reach the age of 50 years without surgical intervention. In a young patient with a family history of Gardner's syndrome, a dental radiograph such as a panogram (linear tomogram) can provide the earliest indication of the presence of this disease process. The at-risk patient should be referred for this radiograph at the earliest possible opportunity.
