Interventional Management

The colon and the cecum should be quantified with a measuring ruler and compared with previous abdominal radiographs each morning in the ICU. Each patient is given individualized care, and treatment is based not only on cecal diameters, but also on clinical history and condition. If the caliber of the cecum has surpassed 12 cm, or if cecal diameter is geometrically progressing beyond 10 cm, inter-ventional measures are needed. The risk of cecal perforation does not have a linear relationship to its diameter. It is the rate of progression of cecal dilatation, the length of time the cecum has dilatated, and the clinical condition of the patient taken together which allows the clinician to assess the emergence of an impending rupture.
