Since the inception of diagnostic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in 1968 the therapeutic approaches to a variety of biliary, ampullary and pancreatic disorders has burgeoned. Endoscopic therapy for pancreatic diseases has been used over the past several decades, particularly in treating patients with acute and chronic pancreatitis. As well, the complications of acute and chronic pancreatitis, such as pancreatic pseudocysts and pancreatic leaks, may be approached via ERCP. Similar techniques to endoscopic treatment of biliary tract diseases, including sphincterotomy, stricture dilatation, basket and balloon extraction of stones, and stent placement, have been extended to treat patients with pancreatic disorders.
