Liver Resection for Noncolorectal Metastases

The role of liver resection for hepatic metastases from noncolorectal tumors has not been studied as well as that for metastases from colorectal primaries. Selected patients with neuroendocrine metastases may benefit from aggressive complete surgical resection and even (incomplete) cytoreductive surgery because of the slow tumor growth and often significant symptoms related to hormone production and tumor bulk. Even when all disease cannot be resected, uncontrolled reports suggest that when symptomatic or when > 90% of disease can be resected, palliative or cytoreductive surgery may also be of benefit in patients with hepatic metastases from neuroendocrine primaries.
