Liver Transplantation

Cholangiocarcinoma has traditionally been thought of as a contraindication to liver transplantation, but recent experience from at least three centers has challenged this view. The most recent update from the Mayo Clinic reports 5-year survival rates of more than 80% for patients with unresected cholangiocarcinoma above the cystic duct without intra-hepatic or extrahepatic metastasis who underwent preoper-ative chemoirradiation therapy and exploratory laparotomy before liver transplantation. Hence, with careful protocols, patients with cholangiocarcinoma benefit from liver transplantation and should be examined in transplant centers.
