It has long been known that the nutritional status of a patient will affect that patient's clinical outcome. Clinicians spend a considerable amount of time repairing and treating patient ills with little attention given to the more subtle signs of nutritional inadequacies or imbalances. As physicians, we have a responsibility to understand the dynamics of nutrition and the gut in both the healthy patient and in the patient under physiologic stress.
