Nutritional Assessment

Determining who is at risk for malnutrition is a complicated science. A nutritional assessment provides a mechanism by which those patients who will require nutritional support may be identified. A nutritional assessment determines not only who is at nutritional risk, but should also provide a gauge to monitor the effectiveness of the nutritional support. The most sensitive marker of malnutrition would be percent usual body weight (UBW) loss, or what patients have deviated from their average body weight. A > 10% UBW loss in 3 months or less is an indicator of a patient at nutritional risk. Serum albumin does not provide a good measure of a patient's nutritional status, but it does represent a measurement of their overall physiologic status (Reinhardt et al, 1980).
