Patient Controlled Sedation

Another area of increasing interest in the endoscopy suite has been the use of patient-controlled sedation. This method allows the patient to control their own sedation during the procedure, and recent studies have shown an increase in patient satisfaction and safety. One study done by Lee and colleagues (2002) evaluated patient-controlled sedation using propofol with alfentanil versus IV sedation with diazepam and meperidine. This study showed less hypotension and no oxygen desaturation in the patient-controlled sedation group in elderly patients undergoing elective outpatient colonoscopy.
