Pegylated IFN

There has been one preliminary report of the use of pegy-lated interferon to treat children. Fourteen children ages 2 to 8 years received pegylated IFN a-2a, 180 mcg/1.73m2 (normalized to their body surface area) subcutaneously once a week for 48 weeks. SVR was 43% 6 months after cessation of therapy. The drug was generally well tolerated but neutropenia necessitated dosage modification in 5 of the 14 children. The three major advantages of this therapy are the once weekly dosage as opposed to three injections per week with standard IFN, the greater antiviral efficacy of this form of IFN compared with standard IFN, and the possibility that the addition of ribavirin, a teratogenic drug, may not be necessary.
