Patients may continue to be at significant risk for developing complications even following completion of the procedure. The critical period following procedures is usually the initial 15 minutes after removal of the endoscope. Patients should be observed in an appropriately staffed and equipped area until they are near their baseline level of consciousness and no longer at risk for hypoxemia and cardiorespiratory depression. Discharge criteria should follow the institutional guidelines.
