Refractory Strictures

Special attention has to be taken in refractory strictures that require multiple, frequent dilatations. The most common cause of refractory strictures is caustic ingestion, surgery induced (anastomotic), or radiation therapy. Due to their complex nature, these strictures should be dilated using either polyvinyl or balloon dilators. Fluoroscopy may be necessary in maneuvering through tight, tortuous strictures.

Patients with refractory symptoms may need to undergo surgical correction in order to alleviate their symptoms.
