Prevention programs and early identification can decrease the extent of sexual abuse and ameliorate its impact. Impressive progress has been achieved in the last 20 years. Despite present challenges to children describing sexual victimization, adults recalling abuse during childhood, and mental health professionals who attempt to assist child victims and adult survivors, the prospects for further progress in preventing and treating child sexual abuse are good.
