Hemizona assay

A further development from the zona-free hamster penetration assay and heterospermic insemination is the hemizona assay, in which spermatozoa from different stallions are incubated with hemizona from a single oocyte. A significant relationship has been reported to exist between the number of bound spermatozoa of a stallion and the probability of pregnancy resulting from insemination with that stallion's semen (Fazeli et al., 1995). Further development of this assay to assess the zona pellucida-binding ability of sperm has also been suggested as a means of assessing spermatozoan viability (Pantke et al., 1992, 1995; Meyers et al., 1995a, 1996).
