Most transplantation centers require patients with a history of alcohol or drug abuse to demonstrate a period of supervised abstinence, generally 6 months or more [6]. Similarly, patients with a past history of medication adherence poor enough to suspect that the immunosuppressive regimen will be compromised may need to delay transplantation until reasonable adherence can be demonstrated [6].
