Classification of renal artery disease. Two main types of renal arterial lesions form the anatomic basis for renal artery stenosis. Atherosclerotic renal artery disease (ASO-RAD) is the most common cause of renal artery disease, accounting for 60% to 80% of all renal artery lesions. The fibrous dysplasias are the other major category of renal artery disease and as a group account for 20% to 40% of renal artery lesions. Arterial aneurysm and arteriovenous malformation are rarer types of renal artery disease.
