Although a general correlation exists between the (water) flux and the (middle molecular weight molecule) permeability of dialysis membranes, they are not synonymous. A, Membrane with numerous small pores that allow high water flux but no ^-microglobulin transport. B, Membrane with a smaller surface area and fewer pores, with the pore size sufficiently large to allow ^-microglobulin transport. The ultrafiltration coefficient and hence the water flux of the two membranes are equivalent.
