Figure 525

Effect of clofibrate on 20-hydroxy-eicosate-traenoic (20-HETE) production in Dahlsalt-sensitive rats. Insulin stimulates sodium reabsorption in the proximal tubule. Consequently, lowering plasma insulin concentrations by increasing insulin sensitivity would potentially result in less sodium retention. In addition, clofibrate induces renal P-450 fatty acid w-hydroxylase activity and, hence, increases metabolism of arachi-donic acid to 20-HETE. (From Roman and coworkers [12]; with permission.)

Diabetes 2

Diabetes is a disease that affects the way your body uses food. Normally, your body converts sugars, starches and other foods into a form of sugar called glucose. Your body uses glucose for fuel. The cells receive the glucose through the bloodstream. They then use insulin a hormone made by the pancreas to absorb the glucose, convert it into energy, and either use it or store it for later use.
