Staghorn calculi. Ammonium generation alkalinizes the urine, creating conditions favorable for build-up of voluminous struvite stones, which can progressively invade the entire pyeloca-lyceal system, forming staghorn calculi. These stones are an endless source of microbes, and the urinary tract obstruction perpetuates infection.
