Radiographic Synopsis

1. AP and lateral projections: Total height of the blocked vertebrae is usually less than expected from the number of involved segments; intervertebral discs rudimentary or completely atrophic; constricted appearance of the intervertebral disc producing a trapezoidal shape of the blocked vertebrae; posterior elements often fused as well (congenital block vertebrae). Fusion of vertebral bodies, without involvement of the spinous processes; absence of constriction at the level of the intervertebral discs (acquired vertebral fusions).

2. Multidirectional planar tomography (laminar fusions are difficult to delineate on plain films): osseous lines encircling the pedicles at two or more levels; vertebral body fusions and hemiver-tebrae often associated (pediculate-laminar bars).
